January 2006

The next meeting of the William Floyd Community Summit Council will be on Wednesday January 25, 2006 in Room 177 (Large Group Instructional Room) in William Floyd High School at 7:30 PM. Our meeting will feature two guest speakers.

First, we will hear from Dowling College Vice President for Development and External Affairs Mr. Michael DeLuise. As you may know, Dowling College has a Shirley Campus on William Floyd Parkway north of Sunrise Highway. Mr. DeLuise will talk about the many fine qualities of Dowling College and how community can utilized their resources.

Our second speaker will be Rich Filiberto, co-chairman of the Quality of Life/Code Enforcement Committee. He will conduct demonstration of the Summit's website, wfcs.us, and walk us through the different sections. The website has many benefits to the membership and committees. For instance, the website contains the ability to provide email addresses to our membership. This would allow each member to have their own email for summit business. In an effort to increase communication within our organization, we hope to increase our use of email between members and committees.

Hope to see you on Wednesday January 25th at 7:30 PM

Committee News

Quality of Life/Code Enforcement Committee met on Tuesday January 10th in Room 177 of the high school. The primary speaker was Dr. Stephen Dewey PHD, who spoke about the permanent effects of illegal addictive drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes on the human brain. Dr. Dewey coordinates a project at the Brookhaven National Lab in Upton, which conducts PET scans of brains of individual. These PET scans shows the impact of these substances on the human brains. The research clearly showed the impact of addictive drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes on dopamine, which is a substance in the brain which controls four important human functions, self control against overly dangerous acts, body movement, and addictive. The use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illegal drugs can destroy the source of dopamine in the brain. It was very interesting.

Youth Services Committee
Vickie Jordan, Chairperson

The Youth Services Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Colonial Youth and Family Services office located on the second floor of the North Fork Bank Building (across from the 7/11 store) on Montauk Highway in Mastic.

The committee had a very successful year with many great projects. In the spring, committee members completed their annual Flower for Friends Sales. As usual, the sales were very successful in raising funds that provided assistance to high school seniors attending their prom. Without this financial assistance, many for these students would not have the opportunity to attend once in lifetime event. The committee thanks the administrators, faculty, staff, and students of the William Floyd High School, Floyd Harbor Florist, and Ricco's Clothing Store of Center Moriches for their support of the Flowers for Friends program.

The Youth Services Committee also played a crucial role in the SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM. This program provided an important summer recreational opportunity for approximately 80 kids three nights a week throughout the summer.

The committee's other successful projects include publication of a Community Cookbook, book donation project at the children ward of Brookhaven Hospital, and assisting the planning of the skate park planned for Smith Point County Park.

Chairperson Vickie Jordan thanks the dedicated members of the committee, Bill Lunt, Vince Cigna, Ray Hopp, Community Volunteer Corps, Dan Els, Tammy Murphy, Sue Mollenhauer Carruti, and the many community volunteers who have helped since Summit's inception.

The Youth Services Committee is always looking for volunteers. For more information, please call Vickie at 772-7108.

Economic Development/ Financial Services Committee
Sue Wischussen - Chairperson

In celebration of the Town of Brookhaven's 350th Anniversary, the Economic Development/Financial Services Committee hosted 500 elementary aged school children at a "Day in Colonial Times". The event provided the children in attendance with the opportunity to learn about milking a cow, colonial era candle making, and doing a laundry on a washboard. The kids left the event with real understanding of living during colonial times and a book about the American Revolution.

Historical Committee
Sue Gonzalez - Chairperson

On the Saturday October 29, 2005, the Historical Committee sponsored a memorial service in honor of Revolutionary War Hero General Nathaniel Woodhull at his grave in Mastic Beach. Members of the committee, who were dressed in period appropriate clothing, spoke about the contributions of General Woodhull to the cause of freedom. At the end of the service, the committee members and visitors placed fresh cut flowers on the General's grave.

The committee believes the service enlightened appropriate 60 adults and children in attendance about the extraordinary history of General Nathaniel Woodhull. They are busy planning of activity designed to encourage all of us to recognize and enjoy the rich history of our community.

Beautification Committee
Pat Matthews - Chairperson

Fall is a busy time for this very successful committee. September brings the annual Fall Festival, which was its usual financial success. With these funds, the committee will be able to plant thousands of bulbs throughout the community - something to look forward to throughout the long cold winter.

October 16, 2005, was the annual community clean up. Once again, this effort galvanized dozens of individuals to clean up our community. The William Floyd Middle Environmental Defense Club students, led by advisor's Ms. Eugenia Jackolski and Mr. Mario D. Domenico, are sprucing up the corner of William Floyd Parkway and Montauk Highway for the winter. This project was possible thanks to the beautification committee payment for the buses to transport the students to the clean up site.

The Beautification Committee is busy making plans for the spring of 2006. That does that sound wonderful.

The committee is always seeking new members. For more information, please Pat Matthews at wfbeautification@yahoo.com or 399-1286.

The next meeting of the William Floyd Community Summit Council will be Wednesday January 25, 2006 in Large Group Instruction Room (Rm 177) of the William Floyd High School. The January newsletter will have more information about this meeting.
